The Schnoor in Bremen

This post has been inspired by my visit to the beautiful Schnoor in Bremen, Germany. Schnoor is an old neighborhood located in the city center with beautiful narrow alleys and tightly built houses.

The neigborhood was slightly damaged during World War II, but since it is an old town that dates back to the 15th century, it needed renovation. In 1959, the Senate of the Free Hanseatic Town of Bremen decided to rebuild the historic area. House owners were invited to restore rundown buildings with financial support from the State of Bremen. This development was in contrast to the common practice in many towns and cities in Germany and Europe until the late 1970s.

In 1973, the Schnoor became a historic district under official heritage conservation through the State Monument Authority. Thanks to the restorations, today, lots of tourists enjoy this beautiful and unique neighborhood in Bremen that speaks of the history and heritage of the Northern Germans.
